Tripod Turnstiles vs. Full-Height Turnstiles: How to Choose the Right Type

When designing an access control system, the first decision to make is not the specific model, but the type of turnstile best suited to the context. There are two broad product families on the market, designed to meet very different needs: compact and versatile tripod turnstiles, and full-height turnstiles, which act as physical barriers. To understand the differences, it’s helpful to look at two concrete examples from the SAIMA Sicurezza range: the TP-92 tripod turnstile and the TR 129 full-height revolving turnstile.

The tripod turnstile: regulating flows without being invasive

Tripod turnstiles, like the TP-92, are designed to manage the orderly passage of authorized persons without becoming an imposing barrier. Their low height (approximately 979 mm for the TP-92) makes them suitable for environments such as offices, reception areas, sports facilities, or areas with controlled access but low risk of physical intrusion.

The strength of this type of barrier is the combination of aesthetics and functionality: the TP-92, for example, is made entirely of AISI 304 stainless steel, with rounded edges that make it ergonomically safe. The electronic microprocessor management allows for remote programming, while the high transit speed (up to 40 passages per minute) makes it ideal for large volumes of people. It should be noted, however, that the tripod, by its very nature, is not designed to physically prevent climb-overs: its primary function is to regulate and count access, not to completely block it.

The full-height turnstile: the barrier that leaves no margins

Full-height turnstiles belong to a completely different category, both in size and design philosophy. The TR 129, which at 2300 mm in height occupies the entire passageway, is a representative example of this type: here, the goal is not simply to regulate the flow, but to provide a true barrier against climb-overs.

The structure, generally made of AISI 430 stainless steel, painted to withstand the harshest conditions, encloses an AISI 304 stainless steel rotor that rotates inside a protective cage, ensuring the passage of only one person at a time and effectively preventing unauthorized access. This type of turnstile is the natural choice for environments where perimeter security is a priority over transit speed: industrial sites, ports, stadiums, data centers, military facilities, and any peripheral access point without constant surveillance.

Two philosophies, two different needs

The comparison between the two typologies can be summarized in a few key points:

Ultimately, the choice between the two families does not depend on budget or aesthetic preferences, but on the more fundamental question: are we trying to manage the flow of authorized people, or physically prevent unauthorized access? In the first case, a tripod turnstile like the TP-92 represents the most balanced solution. In the second, only a full-height turnstile like the TR 129 can offer the necessary security guarantees.

Understanding this distinction upfront allows you to avoid making the wrong choices and design an access control system that is truly proportionate to the risk level of your context.
